NGO donates books worth 9mln birr to Afar State

Semera, February 21, 2007 (WIC) - Ethiopian Community Development Council, a local NGO, donated yesterday more than 15,000 books worth nine million birr to Afar State Finance and Economic Development Bureau.

Speaking at the handing over ceremony, representative of the NGO, Belay Tefera, said the books would benefit colleges, TVET institutes and senior high schools.

Among the donation were books in natural science, social science, engineering, mathematics, business, economics, human rights and information technology.

The representative said the donated books would help the state government in improving quality of education and increasing education coverage.

Community Dev't Council donates books to refugee center

Axum, August 20,2005 [WIC] -The Ethiopian Community Development Council (ECDC) has donated 1,200 books worth over three million birr to the Shimelba Eritrean Refugees Center.  

Speaking at the handing over ceremony, the Axumite Heritage Foundation Project Coordinator with the ECDC, Yitbarek Gebrehiwot said the donation was made in keeping with the pledge of the Council members during their visit to the center. 

The books could be used as references from grades one to high school, he said, promising similar  donations in the future. 

Shimelba Refugees Center Coordinator, Berhe Woldemikael,on his part said the books would help the more than 800 refugees attending elementary and junior secondary school education. 

Established four years ago, the Shimelba Refugees Center shelters 10 thousand refugees, the Coordinator said. 

The Axumite Heritage Foundation Project which is under The Ethiopian Community Development Council has donated more than 100,000 books to libraries in and around Axum town, it was learnt. 

ECDC Hands Over 20,000 Books To Ministry

Addis Ababa , January 10, 2003 (WIC) The Ethiopian Community Development Council (ECDC) today handed over 20,662 books to the Ministry of Education for distribution to institutions of higher learning in the country.

According to the Council's Project Coordinator, Ato Belai Teferra, the books, some 14,000 of which are medical, are valued at over 13,000,000birr.

Dr. Teshome Yizengaw, Vice Minister of Education, Spoke of the significance of the books to helping solve shortage of much needed text books in the country's institutions of higher learning and urged other voluntary organizations to follow the example of the ECDC in this regard.

The books will be distributed among the Addis Ababa, Alemaya, Jimma, Mekele, Gonder and Southern Universities, it was learnt.

Detention center in Axum transformed into public library 

Addis Ababa, September 07, 2001 (WIC) - The Ethiopian Community Development Council (ECDC) disclosed that it has maintained and transformed a dilapidated detention center in Axum Town into a public library.

In a statement sent to WIC yesterday, the Council said that the building used as a detention center during the durg regime was revamped by the council after an agreement reached between the ECDC and the town's council.

The Council, established ten years ago in United States of America, has expended a total of 6.8 million birr for the maintenance work, purchasing of books as well as for their transportation to Ethiopia.

The statement further said that the public library, which commenced rendering service a month ago, could accommodate up to 500 readers.

The Council, has over the past years, donated thousands of books to schools affected by the Ethio-Eritrean war and to other higher academic institutions throughout the country with similar assistance being extended currently to the Mekele University, it was learnt.
