What We Do
ASSIST NEWCOMERS
For nearly 20 years, ECDC has been offering a wide range of educational,
social, and support services that help newcomers to the country
become self-sufficient, contributing members of the community in
the Washington, D.C., metropolitan area. Today, these services continue
to be provided at the ECDC African Community Center offices in Denver,
Colorado, Las Vegas, Nevada, and Washington, D.C., and at the ECDC
Multicultural Community Services office in Arlington, Virginia.
Bicultural, bilingual staff, representing various cultural backgrounds,
work in each of these locations.
Typical services include refugee resettlement, orientation and
adjustment counseling, English-as-a-Second language and citizenship
education classes, information and referral, immigration counseling,
housing assistance, translation and interpretation services, transportation,
crisis intervention and emergency assistance.
A core component at each location is ECDC's employment services,
which help newcomers become self-sufficient while providing employers
with authorized, eager, and hard-working employees. Services include
job counseling, pre-employment orientation, resume preparation,
job development, and job placement. To help newcomers better understand
the American work environment, they participate in individual or
job club sessions.
